Our distant ancestors these days glorified the deity of the autumn sun — Tausen. According to Slavic legends, he was the elder brother of the ancient god Kolyada. Every year, Tausen comes to earth and paves the way for winter.
On August 30, there was a tradition — they burned old things in the backyard so that ailments, sorrows and sorrows would go into the fire with them. And so that they would not lie in wait for new misfortunes, they made amulets from wood, metal and dry grass with their own hands. Small children were protected from diseases in this way: they were doused with water from a bucket on the threshold of the house.
In addition, the penultimate day of August in the peasant communities was considered the day of helping the poor. The beggars, widows and orphans were helped with housework completely free of charge, they shared food and hard currency. This custom was called «cleanup» or «help».
On August 30, the Church honors the memory of Saint Myron, who was a presbyter in Achaia. Miron came from a noble family, but at the same time he was very meek, he never boasted of either money or his origin. It is known that once a local hegemon named Antipater went to a Christian temple to arrest Christians and torture them. Miron met him and began to reproach him for impure thoughts. The enraged presbyter ordered that Myron be thrown to be torn to pieces by wild animals. However, they did not touch the saint, and the presbyter, losing his temper with anger, committed suicide.
