August 4 — Marfa-Surovitsa. We wash ourselves with dew, cook jam
CrimeaPRESS reports:
On August 4, girls in Rus’ prayed for the gift of heavenly beauty. They addressed their hopes and aspirations to Saint Mary Magdalene, one of the myrrh-bearing women, a witness to the resurrection of Christ from the dead. The Church honors her memory today.
Also, on the fourth day of August, girls prepared lotions and poultices from herbs and berries, and read spells and incantations.
Today’s dew was considered good for the skin. At the same time, peasants considered it a real disaster. They said that it was harmful to the harvest and livestock. Dew was extremely feared in those regions where flax was grown. It foreshadowed crop failure and promised numerous troubles and misfortunes to weavers, seamstresses and linen merchants.
