August 5 is Trofim the Sleepless Day. Do you want some raspberries or viburnum?

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The day was called Bessonik for no reason. People usually worked late on August 5th. The harvest season was beginning, so the peasants had plenty of work. In addition, by this time the berries were ripening in the forest — they went to pick them. Housewives had to have time to make homemade preserves — compotes, jams, marmalades. Therefore, people often called August 5th Kalinnik-Malinnik.

In Rus’, viburnum was highly valued. Various healing potions and remedies were prepared from it. For example, many healers and doctors recommended using an infusion of viburnum bark to treat diseases of the nervous system and convulsions, and used it as a hemostatic agent. Viburnum berries were used to treat gastrointestinal ailments and vitamin deficiency. Viburnum is known as a diuretic and tonic. Skin diseases can be cured with an infusion of viburnum flowers. Since the juice of this berry has gelling properties, it was added to applesauce, after which pastille or marmalade was prepared.

In the old days, there was an interesting custom associated with this day. If you needed to buy vegetables or fruits at the market, you had to buy 13 of them. This is due to the fact that August 5 is the day of remembrance not only of Saint Trophim, but also of 12 other holy martyrs (13 in total).

Saint Trophimus, the thirteen martyrs, and Saint Theophilus suffered during the persecution of Christians by Emperor Diocletian in the 3rd-4th centuries. When all these people were brought to trial, they refused to renounce their faith in God and worship idols. That is why the martyrs were tortured, then their legs were broken and they were sent into a blazing furnace. However, God performed a miracle — the martyrs themselves came out of the furnace, completely healthy. After that, the pagans beheaded the martyrs.
