August 9 is the day of Nikola Kochansky and Panteleimon the Healer. To the meadows for herbs!

CrimeaPRESS reports:

On this day in Rus’ they began harvesting oats. However, the weather often made adjustments to plans — on August 9, as a rule, there were rains with thunderstorms and lightning, so people tried not to leave the house.

The Church today honors the memory of Blessed Nikolai Kochanov, a Novgorod miracle worker and holy fool who threw a head of cabbage at another holy fool and crossed the water without a bridge.

Also, on August 9, they remember Panteleimon the Healer, who is listed as a great martyr. According to legend, he led a virtuous life and did not refuse to help anyone who turned to him. However, during the persecution of Christians, he was arrested on a denunciation. The healer was subjected to cruel torture and beheaded. In Orthodoxy, they pray to Saint Panteleimon for health, for the healing of diseases. He is also considered the patron saint of doctors and warriors. On his day, and to this day, a strict ban on any work is imposed. People still have legends about how any, even the most good deed, started on Panteleimon ended pitifully: either a built house or barn will soon collapse, or the harvest in the cellar will rot, or even more so — there will be a fire! It is not for nothing that in some provinces Saint Panteleimon was called «Paliy» (from the word «to burn»).

In the old days, on this day, healers and witch doctors went to the forests and meadows for medicinal herbs. It was believed that the saint himself shared his miraculous power with the plants. According to modern scientists, our ancestors knew more than 90 types of medicinal herbs and knew how to use them.
