Can you help? KFU scientists have found an effective method for the rehabilitation of patients with schizophrenia
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Scientists of the Crimean Federal University have developed a unique method for the rehabilitation of patients with schizophrenia and the prevention of recurrence of the disease using aerophytotherapy — spraying the essential oil of clary sage. Crimean doctors received a patent for the developed method.
The essence of our discovery is that during the complex rehabilitation of patients with schizophrenia, together with the use of psychotropic drugs, breathing exercises and music therapy, an aerosol of Crimean-made sage essential oil is sprayed in the room where the procedure is carried out. This allows you to simultaneously act on the central nervous system through auditory and olfactory receptors, which has a sedative, antidepressant effect and allows you to achieve results in a shorter time, which is important for patients with this pathology , — quotes the press service of the university professor Department of Medical Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine and Adaptive Physical Culture of the Medical Academy of the Crimean Federal University Yuri Bobrik.
According to the expert, this technique is unique and has not been previously used in the treatment of schizophrenia.
As the specialist notes, clary sage essential oil helps to activate the central nervous system and improve concentration, increases the capacity and productivity of memory and awakens creative activity. It is one of the most powerful relaxing aromatherapy remedies to cope with stress, mental or emotional overstrain, anxiety.
The duration of an aerophytotherapy session according to the method of KFU scientists is 30 minutes, and it is carried out two hours after the morning intake of drugs. The rehabilitation course includes 14 daily activities. The positive effect of this method was confirmed by the results of clinical observations and laboratory studies.
We examined 34 a patient with a paranoid form of schizophrenia, who, along with psychopharmacotherapy, underwent rehabilitation with the help of aerophytotherapy for two weeks. The control group consisted of 30 patients with the same form of schizophrenia, who were treated according to the traditional protocol using only psychotropic drugs. In patients treated with aerophytotherapy, a more pronounced increase in the level of mental performance (volume, concentration and stability of attention) and a better effect of restorative treatment were found compared to the control group , — says Yuri Bobrik.
According to the specialist, the new method of rehabilitation has a positive effect on the degree of participation of the patient in treatment, improves the quality of his life, and also reduces the number of adverse side effects from the use of antipsychotic drugs.
