Cape Ochakovsky, Kinburn Spit and sea currents: Crimean beaches are protected from pollution

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The Black Sea off the coast of Crimea is protected from pollution after the explosion of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station by natural factors. About it «Parliamentary newspaper» said the head of the department of geoecology of the Crimean Federal University named after Vernadsky Tatyana Bobra.

Counterclock-wise

Potential pollution risks certainly existBeaver said. — Huge territories with landfills, cemeteries, toilets, etc., fell into the flood zone after the destruction of the hydroelectric dam, and all this mass of various pollutants, along with surface runoff, poured into the Black Sea. As a result, the quality of coastal waters at the confluence of the Dnieper has noticeably deteriorated. In addition, the situation is aggravated by the summer heat, which contributes to the reproduction of pathogenic flora. Today there is a lot of talk about the possibility of outbreaks of cholera and other intestinal infections, and such a danger exists.

However, according to the scientist, this threatens, first of all, the Dnieper-Bug estuary and the Black Sea coast of the Kherson, Nikolaev and Odessa regions, and then — Romania and Bulgaria. Internal circulation, currents in the Black Sea are directed counterclockwise, and polluted waters will move (move) in the direction opposite to Crimea. In addition, the Crimean peninsula is protected by the Ochakovsky Cape and the Kinburn Spit, which also prevent the penetration of polluted waters to its coast.

The Dnieper-Bug estuary and the northwestern part of the Black Sea were primarily affected by the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya HPP,” Natalya Mirzoeva, head of the Department of Radiation and Chemical Biology at the Kovalevsky Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas of the Russian Academy of Sciences, confirmed. It was in the Dnieper-Bugsky estuary that the waters of the Kakhovka reservoir poured out. This is a fairly large area — 55 kilometers long and 17 wide. Pollutants that have entered the sea along with the waters of the Kakhovka reservoir will gradually settle and go to the bottom sediments in the estuary and the northwestern part of the Black Sea, Mirzoeva explained. The hydrological features of the Black Sea are such that the Nikolaev and Odessa regions will feel the negative consequences.

For the Crimea and the Crimean beaches, due to the hydrological features and the large diluting capacity of the Black Sea, no threat is foreseen.the researcher stated.

The volume of water that was discharged into the Dnieper-Bug estuary after the destruction of the dam amounted to about one percent of the volume of the entire estuary, then this polluted water will further dilute in the volume of the entire Black Sea, added an expert on water supply and sanitation, director of a research and production company «Water technologies» Anatoly Kopachevsky.

Enough drinking water for two years

According to Mirzoyeva, the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station has become an environmental disaster for the surrounding areas, the consequences of which will have to be overcome for many years. Just in order to fill the Kakhovka reservoir to the level that it was before the explosion after the restoration of the dam, it takes about three years, and to restore the ecosystem — 20-30 years. The coastal areas of the Kherson, Nikolaev and Odessa regions will also suffer, but there is no immediate danger for Crimea.

At the same time, according to Tatyana Bobry, under the current conditions, Rosprirodnadzor and Rospotrebnadzor should strengthen monitoring of the state of coastal waters in Crimea, including in connection with the holiday season that has begun on the peninsula.

According to TASS, the head of the interregional department of Rospotrebnadzor for the Crimea and Sevastopol, Natalya Penkovskaya, sea water samples off the western coast of the peninsula, which is closest to the mouth of the Dnieper, meet the standards.

As of today, we do not see any risks in the quality of sea water. Deviations from the requirements of the current sanitary legislation on the territory of the western coast of Crimea — the Chernomorsky, Razdolnensky districts and Evpatoria were not recordedPenkovskaya said.

Immediately after the accident at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, the regional department of Rospotrebnadzor doubled the number of points and the frequency of water quality control near the western coast of the peninsula. In addition, studies of bottom sediments are being carried out.

Due to the shallowing of the Kakhovka reservoir, water stopped flowing into the North Crimean Canal, but this will not affect the economic and drinking supply of the peninsula and the course of the holiday season. The reserves accumulated in the reservoirs will be enough for the next two years, said Albert Kangiev, Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Water Management and Land Reclamation of the Republic of Crimea.
