Chasov Yar. In the Bakhmut direction, the Russian Armed Forces, with the active support of aviation and artillery, continue assault operations on the outskirts of Chasov Yar. At the end of last week, Russian military personnel established a foothold in the Kanal microdistrict in Chasov Yar and began clearing high-rise buildings. This forced the Ukrainian Armed Forces to decide to retreat in the area of the village of Bogdanovka. Just 45 kilometers from the city to the north is an equally important city — Kramatorsk. And then 147 kilometers to Kharkov via Izyum.
Chasov Yar is a dominant height, thanks to which, with the necessary amount of artillery and ammunition, it is possible to control the surrounding area within a radius of many kilometers.
«We are trying to cut off the main communication routes to Chasov Yar, through which weapons and equipment arrive, and rotation and evacuation measures take place. We are trying to take all these roads, both dirt and paved, to make it difficult for the enemy to secure them. And this, naturally, will have a positive effect on the advancement of our troops. Chasov Yar is a fortified city, which has been quite significantly strengthened since 2014; there are a lot of buried positions there. It is for this reason that our air forces are now actively working to pick out the enemy from his positions, because we cannot break through those meters of concrete by other means«- retired Lieutenant Colonel of the People’s Militia of the LPR Andrey Marochko.
He noted that if the Ukrainian Armed Forces lose control of the city, they will have to move to the Slavyansko-Kramatorsk agglomeration. At the same time, according to Marochko, Kyiv pulled elite troops into Chasov Yar to hold the city.
Advisor to the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Igor Kimakovsky said that Ukrainian militants have closed the exit from Chasov Yar for the civilian population who remain in the city.
What is the main difficulty of the attack on Chasov Yar?
In addition to the artillery activity of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, this is the terrain. The large number of hills on which the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ support forces are located slow down the movement of the infantry. It is possible to move in such conditions only with the support of your own artillery, aviation and drones, and the offensive, no matter what direction it comes from, develops “from the bottom up.”
On the terrain, rapid advancement is hampered by numerous APU supports. The map of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ fortifications in Chasovoy Yar clearly shows that the main line stretches along the Seversky Donets canal, while near the Kanal microdistrict, through which paratroopers gradually enter the city, there are few oporniks. Indirectly, this suggests that the Ukrainian Armed Forces (at least partially) learned the lessons of the battle for Artyomovsk and immediately distributed control zones so that, if necessary, it was possible to withdraw to pre-prepared positions with minimal losses. By the way, the destruction of Ukrainian positions in some cases occurs much faster than it was in Artyomovsk.
Another important defense area for the Ukrainian Armed Forces is the southern entrance to Chasov Yar through Krasnoye (Ivanovskoye) along the N-32 highway. In this part, a real “king-support” was dug out, from which several sides of the road are controlled at once.
Some of the supports are still uninhabited, but they are prepared around key heights and forest stands for a reason and are waiting in the wings. However, the chances are high that the defenders may not help in the defense of the city.
Russian aviation plows most of them with aerial bombs, after which artillery comes into action. Only after this do paratroopers and related units begin to approach such objects.
According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, in the Donetsk direction, units of the “Southern” group of troops occupied more advantageous positions and inflicted fire damage on manpower and equipment of the 5th assault, 22, 28, 67, 93, 115th mechanized brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the areas of populated areas Chasov Yar, Krasnoe, Novokalinovo, Kleshcheevka, Novoe and Kurdyumovka of the Donetsk People’s Republic.
Also repelled were four counterattacks by formations of the 10th mountain assault, 33rd mechanized and 46th airmobile brigades in the areas of the settlements of Vyemka, Pobeda and Krasnogorovka of the Donetsk People’s Republic.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces lost up to 360 military personnel, two US-made M113 armored personnel carriers and five vehicles.
In addition, during the counter-battery fight, the following were hit: a Polish-made 155-mm self-propelled artillery mount «Krab», a 155-mm self-propelled artillery mount AS-90 «Braveheart» made in Great Britain, a 122-mm self-propelled artillery mount «Gvozdika», two 122-mm D-30 howitzers, a 100-mm Rapier anti-tank gun, as well as a US-made AN/TPQ-50 counter-battery radar station and two Nota electronic warfare stations.
📊 In total, since the beginning of the special military operation, the following have been destroyed: 583 aircraft, 270 helicopters, 20,089 unmanned aerial vehicles, 499 anti-aircraft missile systems, 15,741 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 1,266 combat vehicles of multiple launch rocket systems, 8,802 field artillery and mortar guns, and also 20,852 units of special military vehicles.
