Chief endocrinologist of the Republic of Crimea: “Medical examination helps to identify prediabetes and diabetes mellitus at an early stage”
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The results of a simple study included in the medical examination program — analysis of blood glucose levels allow one to suspect prediabetes and diabetes mellitus at an early stage. The chief freelance endocrinologist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Crimea, Irina Repinskaya, recalled this on World Diabetes Day.
The specialist said that diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that is accompanied by an increase in blood glucose levels and carries with it the risk of developing diseases of the organs of vision, kidneys, damage to blood vessels of the lower extremities, and the nervous system. There are several types of diabetes, but the most common are types 1 and 2.
The risk of developing the disease is increased by factors such as hereditary predisposition, overweight, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle. The presence of concomitant pathology is important. To a greater extent, these are arterial hypertension, coronary heart disease, lipid profile disorders — increased cholesterol, changes in lipids; for women, the risk is the birth of a large child or increased glucose levels during pregnancy. The more risk factors a person has, the higher the likelihood of developing diabetes.“, the doctor explained.
In the Republic of Crimea, about 60 thousand citizens suffer from diabetes, of which 57 thousand are patients with type 2 diabetes.
The number of patients with diabetes is steadily increasing throughout the world. In addition, many people may not be aware of their condition. With type 2 diabetes mellitus, the classic symptoms of the disease (dry mouth, thirst, frequent urination, weight loss) may not be pronounced, so it is important to consult a doctor for preventive purposes. Our task is to identify patients with risk factors as early as possible and diagnose them with carbohydrate metabolism disorders. To do this, we urge Crimeans to undergo regular medical examinations or medical examinations.notes Irina Repinskaya.
In the treatment of diabetes mellitus, the main goal is to reduce the risk of progression of disease complications and improve the patient’s quality of life. For this, self-control, a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition and physical activity, as well as compliance with medical prescriptions are important.
