July 1 is celebrated in Russia as Combat Veterans Day. In Sevastopol, in the square of soldiers-internationalists, a ceremony of awarding medals «Veteran of Combat Actions» was held, members of the «Combat Brotherhood» organization were presented with letters of thanks and letters of appreciation. The event was attended by representatives of the Government, deputies, members of veteran organizations, the Sevastopol regional branch of the All-Russian public organization «Combat Brotherhood» and residents of the city. They laid flowers at the monument to the soldiers who died during the Afghan war, and honored their memory with a minute of silence.
This day is significant for every Russian, for every Sevastopol citizen. We mourn for the dead and immensely proud of our heroes. Our veterans today are active people with a clear civic position, ready to stand up for the Motherland again and again. Many of them are on the front lines today as fighters and humanitarian aid,» the press service of the Government of Sevastopol quotes Yelena Kolesnik, curator of veterans in the Department of Internal Policy.
Also, creative teams of the city performed for veterans of hostilities on the summer stage «Rakushka», and in the evening a concert will be held at the Sevastopol Center for Culture and Arts.
This year we celebrate this holiday officially for the first time — last year, at a meeting of the Legislative Assembly, the city’s law on holidays and memorable dates was adopted. There are about 2,500 combat veterans in Sevastopol today, but this number is growing. We try to assist in the rehabilitation of veterans, to help the families of the victims. Thanks to the Memory of Generations Foundation, we provide prostheses and necessary medicines free of charge , — says Vasily Zubenko, head of the Combat Brotherhood organization.
The Sevastopol branch of the «Combat Brotherhood» has about members. The organization is also actively working with participants in a special military operation to denazify and demilitarize Ukraine. After its completion, it is planned to involve military personnel in patriotic work.
Recall that the first meeting of veterans of military operations and local conflicts took place in 533 on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow. Then the community members voted on the date of the annual meeting — July 1. On this day, they honor the heroes who performed their duty in Africa, Latin America, South Asia, the Caucasus, Tajikistan, Syria, the Korean Peninsula, Vietnam, Afghanistan, the Chechen Republic, on the banks of the Dniester, in Abkhazia, South Ossetia.
