Commentary by Sergei Aksenov on the anniversary of the formation of the People's Militia of Crimea

In 2014, thousands of Crimeans stood up to defend their choice to be with Russia.

Commentary by the Head of the Republic of Crimea Sergei Aksenov in connection with the tenth anniversary of the formation of the Crimean People’s Militia.

Today we habitually call the formation of the Crimean People’s Militia, which began exactly 10 years ago, a historical event. But then, of course, we didn’t think about it. The situation was extremely tense, and no one knew how it would end. So joining the militia required courage and strong convictions.

The militia had a task: to prevent provocations and bloodshed. And they dealt with it. Although Bandera’s supporters and their Crimean accomplices tried their best to spoil the Crimeans in various ways, including attempting terrorist attacks.

In those days, thousands of our fellow countrymen, at the call of their hearts, stood up to defend their freedom and their choice to be with Russia — our beloved Fatherland. It was a powerful patriotic impulse. And today, many members of the people’s militia take part in the Northern Military District and help our soldiers in the rear.
