Crimea is in the risk zone for West Nile fever
CrimeaPRESS reports:
West Nile fever was originally common in countries with hot climates. It was previously reported that due to global warming, the area of possible spread of the disease is expanding. In 2024, cases of the fever have already been registered in Russia in the Astrakhan and Ryazan regions and Tatarstan.
Crimea is one of the territories where cases of West Nile fever may occur. But a full range of <…> measures are being taken, and to date, no cases of West Nile fever have been registered in the Republic of Crimea or the city of Sevastopol— said Penkovskaya.
She specified that mosquitoes are the carriers of the disease. However, measures to combat them and prevent the disease are well known and have long been developed: after all, these same insects can cause malaria, the prevention of which in the southern regions of the Russian Federation has been successfully carried out for many years.
The interviewee added that residents and visitors of Crimea can further reduce the likelihood of infection if they use repellents and other methods of protecting themselves from mosquito bites.
It was previously reported that if the first symptoms of West Nile fever appear, you should immediately consult a doctor. The disease can progress with damage to the central nervous system in the form of meningitis or meningoencephalitis, as well as in a flu-like form with headaches, fever, and sore throat. Skin rashes and signs of intestinal upset may appear.
