Crimea ramps up construction of 4G base stations
CrimeaPRESS reports:
This year, telecom operators have significantly increased the pace of construction of new and modernization of existing base stations. During the first half of 2024, mobile operators built and put on the air 494 new base stations for mobile radiotelephone communications and 179 communication facilities were modernized to the modern level of LTE (4G) technology— says the response to the request signed by Deputy Minister Yulia Kilik.
Earlier, the Ministry of Information reported that 240 base stations for mobile radiotelephone communications were built in 2023, 87 in 2022, and 46 in 2021.
Construction of base stations for mobile communications is underway at such key infrastructure facilities as the federal highway «Tavrida» and the railway line Simferopol — Dzhankoy — Crimean Bridge.
According to her, telecom operators are actively working to improve the quality of radio coverage with a 4G signal, which should approach the coverage of 2G and 3G technologies in its area. Currently, about 98% of the population living on the peninsula and about 70% of the region’s territory are provided with mobile communications in 2G and 3G networks.
Communication services in Crimea are provided by the Crimean companies K-Telecom (Win-mobile brand), KTK-Telecom (Volna Mobile), Krymtelecom, Sevtelecom and Miranda. Kilik said that the prospect of other operators appearing in the Republic of Crimea depends on the plans of the management of these companies, as well as on the availability of permits, frequency and number resources, which are assigned to communication operators by federal executive authorities. «Currently, federal communication operators have not informed the ministry of plans to create their own communication infrastructure on the territory of the Republic of Crimea and have not asked for assistance, — notes Kilik.
