Crimean amateur astronomer Gennady Borisov discovered his 80th asteroid
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The discoverer of the interstellar comet, amateur astronomer Gennady Borisov from the Crimean village of Nauchny, discovered his 80th asteroid. The astronomer announced this on Sunday TASS.
The asteroid was small, only a couple of meters in diameter, and flew closer than geostationary satellites, at a distance of approximately 28-30 thousand km from Earth. I saw him at about half past five in the morning. It became the eightieth asteroid I discovered since 2013. The asteroid can now be observed in the southern hemispheresays Gennady Borisov.
According to him, since the beginning of 2024, he has already discovered nine near-Earth asteroids. One of them is potentially dangerous for the Earth with a diameter of about 200 m. For two more asteroids, including the one discovered on Sunday, he is awaiting the release of a circular from Harvard, where the Minor Planet Center is located. 2023 was a record year for Borisov, when he discovered 53 asteroids. His main focus is tracking comets. In total, the amateur astronomer has discovered 12 comets. He opened the last one in the fall of 2023. Discoveries are made using telescopes of his own design.
The astronomer discovered an interstellar comet, which received his name C/2019 Q4 (Borisov), on August 30, 2019. The discovery was made using a self-made mirror-lens telescope installed in the village of Nauchny in Crimea. He made his first discovery of the comet in 2013.
