Grandmaster Sergey Karyakin said in an interview RIA Newsthat he is fully aware of the reality of all threats against himself and his family for openly supporting the SVO and takes appropriate security measures.

A native of Simferopol, Karjakin publicly supported the SVO from the first days, for which he was disqualified by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and missed the Candidates Tournament for the world crown. Karjakin later stated that in international tournaments he would fundamentally play only under the Russian flag, and not in a neutral status as decided by FIDE. The Grandmaster has visited new Russian regions more than once on a humanitarian mission.
