Crimean doctors saved a young girl with a severe fracture of the spine

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Doctors of the GBUZ RK «Simferopol Clinical Emergency Hospital No. 6» saved a young woman with a severe fracture of the spine. According to the head of the Department of Neurosurgery Konstantin Semkin, on June 27, 2023, a 27-year-old girl was admitted to the hospital with injuries sustained as a result of an accident. The patient was immediately examined, diagnosed with a rupture of the spinal column at the level of 2-3 lumbar vertebrae.

In fact, the girl’s body, that is, the spine, was torn in half. In order to transport the patient, it was necessary to put her into a medical sleep. Not only the spine itself was affected, but also the internal organs of the nervous system — the dura mater, the roots of the spinal cord. Urgent surgical treatment was required — an emergency operation lasting five hours was performed. The surgery was performed by me and the attending physician of the patient Seid-Abla Emil Rustemovich— said Konstantin Semkin.

During the operation, which belongs to the category of high-tech medical care, neurosurgeons installed a titanium metal structure on the patient’s spine.

After the surgical treatment, it was possible to restore the sagittal and frontal balance, completely compare all the fragments, collect the torn roots of the spinal cord using microsurgical techniques, and seal the dura mater. At the moment, the girl has positive dynamics, the function of the pelvic organs has been restored. The patient has one leg fully functional, the other has a slight neurological deficit, but she will get up and walk. If desired, the girl will be able to endure and give birth to a child. At the moment, the patient is preparing for discharge, then she will have to undergo a stage of medical rehabilitation— said the head of the neurosurgery department.

According to the specialist, fractures of this nature, that is, a rupture of the spinal column, are quite rare. For eight years of work of the neurosurgical department of the Simferopol Clinical Hospital SMP No. 6, this is the fourth such case. In general, the department performs more than 700 surgeries per year, including about 600 spinal surgeries for various types of fractures, tumors, and degenerative processes in bone tissue. Specialists continue to master modern methods of surgical treatment.
