Crimean «Massandra» and the Kurchatov Institute will create a nursery for autochthonous (local) grape varieties

The Massandra Company, the National Research Center Kurchatov Institute and the All-Russian National Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking Magarach of the Russian Academy of Sciences will create a nursery for growing Russian autochthonous grape varieties. Valery Troychuk, First Deputy General Director of PJSC Massandra, announced this on Thursday.
Our production association «Massandra» has decided to become a participant in a comprehensive scientific and technical project to create an innovative breeding nursery center for Russian autochthonous grape varieties within the framework of the federal scientific and technical program for the development of agriculture, together with the National Research Center «Kurchatov Institute» and the Institute «Magarach» , — quotes Troychuk TASS .
It is expected that by 2025 the nursery specialists will grow the first seedlings of autochthonous varieties. As the planned results of the work of the center, the representative of the company named the development of a new technology for isolating clones of Russian autochthons, the creation of a field collection of varieties, the development of methods for growing planting material, and others. As part of applied research, scientists will have to carry out genetic certification of autochthonous varieties of the Russian Federation, select a method for controlling their incidence and ways of improving health using molecular genetic approaches, he specified.
The tasks that we set for ourselves as manufacturers are the organization of industrial production of planting material, testing and optimization of the developed technologies … We also intend to create the production of seedlings of the highest quality category, an elite material necessary for laying virus-free queen cells of Russian autochthonous varieties. So that we can multiply and distribute healthy high-quality material throughout the country , — the representative of Massandra concluded.
The industry of viticulture and winemaking in Russia is actively developing today, experts note that the stimulus for this was the annexation of Crimea in 2014 year.
