Crimean police report a new fraud scheme… via smartphone screen broadcast
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The Crimean police spoke about a new trick of online scammers. It’s essentially a «modernized» version of the «update app» suggestion, but with a «technical» twist.
Fraudsters create an account in the messenger with a name that imitates the bank logo, from which they make the first call under the guise of a bank employee and ask the interlocutor whether he has recently updated his mobile application. If the answer is no, the “employee” asks to wait for a call from a bank specialist who will help update the application. The second “employee” makes a video call and explains this by the need to identify the client using biometrics. It then asks you to enable split screen mode and log into the bank’s mobile app. At the same time, scammers claim that this is absolutely safe, since the screen is visible only to the robot, and the employee himself will not see it.
In practice, screen broadcasting allows attackers to see card numbers, account amounts and codes from SMS messages sent by the bank— reported the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.
Of course, with this and other information, fraudsters can access the client’s personal account from an application on the device and steal money or convince him to transfer it to a “secure account.”
Important to remember:
— bank employees do not contact clients via instant messengers;
— “robotic system for account diagnostics” is an invention of scammers.
Be carefull!
