Crimean police warn about remote fraud “schemes”

CrimeaPRESS reports:

NB! There will be no calls or messages from the bank to Telegram, WhatsApp, Viber.

Cases of remote crimes against citizens continue to be registered in Crimea. Fraudsters make calls through Telegram, WhatsApp, Viber messengers, posing as law enforcement officers and bank employees; advertisements are posted on free classifieds websites and in groups on social networks with offers of work or easy earnings through investments; convince gullible citizens to install third-party applications on their smartphones or follow unknown links.

CALLS via Telegram, WhatsApp, Viber messengers, including with the logo of one of the leading banks in Crimea.

Over the past week, 46 such crimes using telephone calls were registered. People, believing in the plausible stories of scammers, gave them 9 million 860 thousand and 818 rubles— reported the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.

A local resident contacted the Simferopol police. He said that unknown people called his phone via messenger and introduced themselves as security officers from one of the banks. They reported that unknown persons were trying to obtain a loan in the applicant’s name. In order to save money, the man transferred more than 2 million rubles to a “safe” account. As police officers found out, this is the second time the citizen has fallen for the scammers’ tricks. Earlier, in September of this year, unknown people called him through one of the instant messengers. The attackers convinced him that his bank account was under threat of hacking. To protect the funds, the man transferred more than 200 thousand rubles to unknown persons.

A man contacted the Yalta police. He said that an unknown person called him in one of the messengers and, introducing himself as a bank employee, said that the applicant’s bank account was under threat of hacking. To secure the funds, the man without hesitation transferred more than 100 thousand rubles to the unknown person.

A local resident contacted one of the Simferopol police departments. He said that his relative’s phone received a call from an unknown person who introduced himself as a law enforcement officer and said that his close relative was taken to the hospital after she was allegedly hit at a pedestrian crossing. Throwing the victim into panic, the unknown person swindled him out of more than 300 thousand rubles.

Also, citizens who receive calls from unknown persons fall for the tricks of scammers and, using other life situations, defraud their victims of large sums of money.

INTERNET SITES, SOCIAL NETWORKS.

36 cases of fraudulent activity related to the use of social networks, instant messengers and Internet sites, as a result of which citizens lost 4 million 463 thousand 709 rubles,” the police noted.

The scammers received the maximum amount of money in this category from a resident of Dzhankoy. He told the police that he transferred more than 200 thousand rubles to an unknown account after he received a message in one of the popular instant messengers from an unknown person who introduced himself as an employee of one of the banks. An unknown person, under the pretext of protecting the money, convinced the applicant to transfer funds to a supposedly safe account.

A man contacted the Yalta police and said that he had found a suitable apartment for long-term rental on a free classifieds website. However, when the applicant sent an advance payment for housing in the amount of more than 100 thousand rubles, the landlord stopped communicating.

A resident of Yalta turned to the police for help after she transferred more than 10 thousand rubles to an unknown person. She said that on one of the free advertisement sites she wanted to buy animal food at a profit. After the woman transferred funds as payment for goods to an unknown seller, he stopped communicating.

INSTALLING THIRD-PARTY APPLICATIONS AND FOLLOWING THE LINKM.

More than 236 thousand rubles disappeared from the victim’s account after clicking on a link from an unknown source.
A man contacted the Dzhankoy police. He said that he saw an advertisement in an online game about earning extra money. After he went to the website indicated in the advertisement and left his contacts there, the applicant was contacted by an unknown person who sent another link under the pretext of investing. After clicking on the link, more than 236 thousand rubles disappeared from the man’s account.

The police once again reminds:

You should never rush to make decisions regarding money. Remember, the safety of your financial assets depends only on you, and only you decide how to ensure their safety!

Be vigilant and follow the recommendations:

— do not tell anyone your bank card details and PIN code;
— do not provide any SMS codes, even to a bank employee;
— do not confirm transactions that you did not perform;
— do not believe people who introduce themselves as law enforcement officers and banking employees who report that any transactions are being made with your money account at the moment;
— do not follow links unknown to you that have been sent to you via messengers from third-party sources;
— do not install applications on your mobile phones that you are hearing about for the first time or do not have detailed information about how they work;
— do not agree to prepayment when buying or selling property through free Internet portals;
— do not follow the instructions of unknown citizens trying to convince you of quick “easy” money — no one is interested in enriching you for free;
— do not give your bank card to strangers.

If you have become a victim of scammers, immediately report it to the police using the single number 102 or submit a written statement to any nearest police department, or through the official website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.
