Crimean watermelons and melons are ripe – harvesting has begun

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The harvesting of melons and gourds has begun in the Crimean fields – watermelons and melons have ripened. This was reported by Acting Minister Alime Zaredinova:

The production of melons in Crimea has a positive trend. Watermelons and melons are grown in 12 districts of Crimea, on an area of more than 500 hectares. The annual harvest of striped berries is about 17 thousand tons. The leading producers are Krasnoperekopsky, Krasnogvardeysky, Dzhankoysky and Razdolnensky districts. To date, Crimean producers have already collected 700 tons of watermelons. In addition to traditional varieties, our farmers also grow exotic species — seedless watermelons with yellow pulp, which are popular with residents and tourists of Crimea. We supply some of the products to other regions of the country.

According to Alime Zaredinova, overall this year’s harvest volume is expected to be at the same level as last year.

Improved approaches of farmers to cultivation technologies contribute to obtaining stable gross harvests. The climatic conditions of the region are considered ideal for their cultivation. Hot June gave the opportunity for agricultural producers of Crimea to start harvesting watermelons earlier than usual. Mass ripening of watermelons began in early July, which became possible due to earlier planting of seedlings, which allowed them to successfully gain a foothold and grow in the spring and early summer. The abnormal heat observed in Crimea did not affect the quality of watermelons. We will summarize the main results of the berry harvest in the fall— summed up the acting Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Crimea, Alime Zaredinova.
