Day off for Knowledge Day — how to take it? Detailed instructions for parents

CrimeaPRESS reports:

In 2024, the celebration of Knowledge Day in Russia has been moved from Sunday, September 1, to Monday, September 2. For many parents, it is important to spend this day with their children heading to school. Avito Rabota experts looked at ways in which working Russians can get a day off on Knowledge Day.

1. Paid leave for one day

If you have unused paid vacation days, you can take one of them on September 2. This way you can spend the day with your child while still getting paid.

Steps:

  1. Make sure you have available vacation days to use.
  2. Notify your employer in advance of your intention to take a day off and make sure it will not conflict with your co-workers’ schedules.
  3. If your vacation is already scheduled for another period, ask your employer to reschedule part of it to September 2.

2. Leave without pay

If you have already used your paid leave or you do not want to waste it on one day, you can take unpaid leave. This option is available to all employees, but there are categories to whom the employer cannot refuse to provide such leave.

Steps:

  1. Write an application for unpaid leave and submit it to your employer.
  2. Wait for approval. The employer can give you a one-day leave without pay. If you are a privileged employee, they cannot refuse you.

To whom the employer does not have the right to refuse leave at their own expense:

  • Participants of the Great Patriotic War.
  • Working old-age pensioners.
  • Parents and spouses of deceased military personnel and employees of government agencies.
  • People with disabilities.
  • Heroes of Socialist Labor, Heroes of Labor of the Russian Federation, full holders of the Order of Labor Glory.
  • Trustees of electoral associations and candidates.
  • Part-time workers (if the vacation at the main job is longer).
  • Workers who combine work and study.
  • Single parents with a child under 14 years of age, parents with two or more children or with a disabled child under 18 years of age.
  • Civil and municipal employees (for family and valid reasons).
  • Spouses of military personnel (if the leave coincides with the military personnel’s leave).
  • In other cases provided for by the Labor Code, other federal laws or a collective agreement.

3. Time off for overtime work or work on a day off

If you previously worked on weekends or holidays, you have the right to double pay or an additional day off — time off. This additional day off can be used on September 2 to spend Knowledge Day with your child.

Steps:

  1. Think about whether you had to work overtime or weekends. Make sure you have the opportunity to take time off.
  2. Notify your employer that you would like to use the time off on September 2 in lieu of increased overtime pay.
  3. Please arrange for the use of time off on September 2nd in the HR department of your organization.

4. Donor’s day off

If you are a donor, you are entitled to an additional paid day off, which, by agreement with your employer, can be used on a day convenient for you, including September 2.

Inform your employer of your intention to use the donor day off on September 2. You will be able to spend Knowledge Day with your child without losing your salary or official vacation days.
