December 11 – Stepan Zimny. If you see a jay, follow it
CrimeaPRESS reports:
This day was popularly called differently: Fedor, Stepan, Irinarchov day, Stepany Winter, Soykin day, Irinarchov, Stefan the New. Usually on December 11, jays flew to human habitation, hence another name for the day — Jay Bird. This bird in Rus’ was considered the intercessor and patroness of newborns. The good jay brought good luck and happiness to the baby that appeared today on its tail.
Our ancestors believed that on her wings she carried small mirrors in which you could see your fate if you looked closely. If on this day a bird flew to the window and screamed, then this was considered a good sign: the winged people’s favorite foreshadowed happiness. The bird had to be respected: open the window, and if you follow it, it will definitely lead you to a good place.
And today they were also guessing for success in trading matters: early in the morning they went out into the street and threw a handful of different coins into a snowdrift, after which they began to look for them. If the smallest one turns out to be the first, don’t expect good luck; if you find a ruble, then everything will be fine. In addition, we listened to the water in the well. If a melodious ringing was heard, they believed that everything would be fine in terms of money next year, but when the water was “silent”, they did not count on profit.
Signs of the day:
- A rapid thaw means imminent, prolonged frosts.
- Geese often flap their wings – it’s getting warmer.
- If today is cold and dry, summer will be hot and dry.
- The stove ash goes out quickly — it will be warm.
- In the nook a piglet squeals — wait for the cold.
Name days are celebrated today by: Pavel, Sergey, Alexey, Anna, Vasily, Peter, Stepan, Andrey, Ivan, Timofey.
