December 2 is Obadiah Day. Out of the cold, evil spirits are asking to enter houses
CrimeaPRESS reports:
On this day, the owner of the house must tap all the window frames and jambs with the butt of an ax, so that evil spirits do not hide in a person’s home, escaping from the frost. In such a matter as protection from all kinds of demons, a sickle, a scythe, a knife and, naturally, an ax were considered the strongest amulets.
Who or what did the Russian people call “evil spirits”? A very diverse mysterious force that could both harm and act for good. These are water creatures, and goblin, and brownies, and mermaids, and of the field, and devils, and demons. All these entities, our ancestors believed, had a certain appearance and special habits. Dead people endowed with supernatural powers were also considered unclean. The very definition of “unclean” literally meant “inhuman,” “dirty,” “devoid of holiness,” “threatening with danger.”
However, despite all the precautions of the peasants, a supernatural force was still present in the house and could at any moment crawl into the dishes left open, into the mouth of a yawning person. Moreover, on December 2, people were afraid to go outside, as they could bring illness into their homes, caught from the wind, snowfall or blizzard.
The Church today honors the memory of Saint Obadiah, one of the twelve minor prophets. The legend says that Obadiah lived around the period of the defeat of the Jewish kingdom and was a housekeeper at the court of King Ahab. There was debauchery all around, but Obadiah himself tried to lead the most righteous lifestyle possible. Subsequently, the ruler’s wife named Jezebel organized persecution of Christians, and Obadiah began to help supporters of his faith. He hid them in caves and visited them in dungeons. Then he left government service and became the companion of another famous prophet named Elijah. After this, Obadiah also received the gift of prophecy. After him, there was even a so-called book of prophecies, consisting of one chapter.
Signs of the day:
- Based on today’s weather, we judged the upcoming haymaking.
- If the wind changes from southeast to southwest, the weather will deteriorate.
- If the sky is clear, it means there will be frost; dim – thaw.
- If the cattle butts, wait for a snowstorm.
- The cows’ nose coming out of the manger seems to indicate a change in the weather.
Name days are celebrated today by: Mikhail, Valentin, Konstantin, Alexander, Sergei, Ignatius, Gerasim, Peter, Hilarion, Benjamin.
