This day was also popularly called Ambrose, Nil Stolbensky, Nile. And you know, these days began the holiday-free period. In Rus’, the New Year was not celebrated, so from that moment until Christmas, the holidays ended (that is, in the period from December 20 to January 6). Our ancestors said: “Saint Ambrose came and threw away the holidays.”
On December 20, young girls sat down to sew clothes for the next year. Before they started, they read a special prayer, and they also said sentences during the process.
The church on December 20 honors the memory of Saint Ambrose of Milan, who lived in Italy around the 4th century and was known as a bishop of the Christian church and preacher. It was Ambrose who became famous for his ability to compose hymns. He is considered one of the four influential bishops of Christianity. Moreover, Ambrose’s authority was so strong that the bishop could even influence the decision-making of Emperor Theodosius the Great, who did not allow himself to be dictated to by anyone else. It was precisely such relations between the state and the church that became a precedent that helped determine the development of the country for many years to come.
