December 25 – today is Spyridon Solstice Day

CrimeaPRESS reports:

And this day was also popularly called Spiridon-solstice, Spiridon, Spiridon-turn signal, solstice, solstice, Spiridon-turn, solstice, Spiridon day, turn signal, Spiridon day.

In Rus’ it was believed that today Saint Spyridon himself turns the sun for the summer and makes sure that it does not hide from people (solstice). Red Sun dressed up on this day in a beautiful sundress, tied up his silver hair with a golden kokoshk and sat in his chariot drawn by three dashing horses: gold, silver and diamond — and turned them sharply for the summer season.

At the same time, December 24 was considered a dangerous day; after all, there was a struggle between darkness and light. Trying to help the sun return as quickly as possible, the peasants sculpted snow women in their yards and organized round dances around them. Peasant women baked round loaves of bread on which oblique crosses were pressed. When it began to get dark, they went outside and lit fires. Young peasants climbed high hills or hills and began to call out to the sun, inviting him to return home. At this time, the owners of the houses walked around the entire hut and outbuildings in a circle, putting the sign of the sun on all their property, thereby driving away various evil spirits. The owner placed an ax on the threshold, and the hostess stuck a sickle into the lintel, because sharp steel also reliably protected against demonic power.

And who is Spiridon? Saint Spyridon of Trimythous, who lived on the territory of Cyprus in the 3rd-4th centuries. As a child, Spiridon, even despite his years, led a righteous life and sincerely believed in God, was friendly and sympathetic. For his good deeds, he was awarded the gift of healing and could also cast out demons. After the death of his wife, Spyridon became the bishop of the city of Trimifunt in Cyprus. According to legend, one day there was a fairly long drought, and the saint was able to bring rain with the help of prayer. By his example, Spiridon showed how a real Christian should behave; he was hardworking and kind. He also took care of strict observance of church rules and the preservation of the text of the Holy Scriptures unchanged.
