December 26 is Eustratus Day. Don’t swear, otherwise the witch will fall on your head…

CrimeaPRESS reports:

People said that on December 26, witches gather for gatherings, the main theme of which is how to grab the Sun and destroy it.

On December 26, our ancestors expected the appearance of evil spirits from literally all sides. It was believed that the witch could turn into a cat, a mare, a hornless cow, a snake, a chicken, and a dog. It could also become an inanimate object, for example, a needle, a ball, a haystack, a rolling barrel. They said: each witch usually had 12 appearances. There were also sorcerers who left their homes, turning into birds, smoke or a whirlwind. That is why, by the behavior of the whirlwind, it was often judged that a witch was nearby. For example, the smoke from the chimney of the witches’ home was never quiet and calm, but always swirled in clouds, regardless of the weather.

In addition, they believed that witches could fly not only on a broom, but also on a shovel or other utensils associated with the hearth, since they cast magic in front of the stove. They said that if you knock over the handle of the stove, the witch will not be able to cast a spell. If the stove damper is turned the other way around, the witch will not return to the house, since she will not be able to find it. It was the witches who controlled harvests and crop failures, the health and illness of livestock, and the weather. Therefore, on December 26, various rituals were performed to fight the machinations of evil spirits.

By the way, watch your speech today! You cannot use foul language on the day of Eustratus, because a witch may fall on your head straight from the sky.

The Church today honors the memory of the monks Eustratius, Eugene, Auxentius, Orestes, Mardarius, who suffered for their faith in Christ around the 4th century in Sebaste. The first to suffer was Auxentius, a presbyter of the Arabian Church, who was imprisoned by the pagans. The military commander Evstratiy, seeing with what restraint and steadfastness the arrested man endured suffering, also declared himself a Christian and was subjected to similar tortures. Subsequently, Eustratius and Auxentius were executed. Further, the young warrior Orestes and the commoner Mardari also declared faith in Christ, after which they were sentenced to death.

And here’s another thing: from that day on, it was customary to monitor the weather for 12 days. It was believed that each new day predicted the weather for the whole month. So, for example, December 26 corresponded to the character of January, December 27 indicated February, December 28 was appropriate for March, and so on until Christmas. And it, in turn, predicted the weather of December next year.

Name days are celebrated today by: Vladimir, Arseny, Gabriel, Orest, Alexander, Evgeny, Anastasia, German, Ivan, Nikolay.
