December 29 is Ageev Day. In Rus' it was believed that this Saint taught on the righteous path
CrimeaPRESS reports:
People said that two days before the New Year, the land, as if sensing the approach of the holiday, hurried to dress up. Spiridon gilded it with the sun, Nikola sprinkled it with snow, and Agey silvered it with frost, widely and generously hanging fragile ice lace around. And “if there is frost all around, then Ananias will be red (December 30),” and Christmastide will delight with warmth and sun.
This day was also called — Agaeus, Haggai-Ineseus, Haggai-winter-pointer, honoring the memory of Saint Ageus, who is known as one of the last prophets of the Old Testament, who lived around the 4th century. It is Agea who is credited with various prophecies that are addressed to the Jewish king Zerubbabel, as well as to the high priest Jesus, whom the prophet reproaches for inaction. It was Agei who encouraged government officials to continue the restoration of the temple in Jerusalem, which had previously been suspended on the initiative of the previous ruler. There is practically no information about the life of Ageus, but legend says that in his early youth he came to Judea from Babylon and predicted the return of his people from Egyptian captivity. Agey died in Jerusalem, where he was buried.
In Rus’ it was believed that this Saint instructed on the righteous path and rewarded hard work. People born on this day were revered as successful and hardworking owners. Our ancestors also believed that Ageus stood up for the purity of the human soul.
And that night, according to folk custom, they lit fires and threw men made of snow into them. If the flame quickly died out, then sunny and clear weather was expected for Christmastide.
There were other signs of the day:
- Today’s frost promises warm weather for Christmastide; if there is frost, it means the cold will last until Epiphany.
- Like Agey, so is April.
- If severe frost drew patterns on the glass, there will be frost for another 20 days.
- If the day on Haggai is clear, then December 30 will be clear.
- It’s cold on Haggai – the winter will be fierce.
- If it’s windy today, and the snow has piled up close to the fences, the summer will be bad, the gap remains — for the harvest.
