December 4 – Entry into the Temple of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Entry Fairs
CrimeaPRESS reports:
On December 4, a very active trading time began in Rus’ — the so-called Vvedensky fairs started. As a rule, during this period there was an active sale of sleighs. Test drives were made on this winter mode of transport. Usually newlyweds took part in such festivities and were seated in special painted sleighs. The sleigh was driven by a man wearing a sash. The bride also had to dress up in her best clothes.
The Church today celebrates the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos. It is known that Mary’s parents, Saint Anne and Saint Joachim, were unable to conceive a child for a long time and lived to an advanced age. One day an angel appeared to them and informed them about the imminent birth of Mary. After this, Anna and Joachim decided that they would send their daughter to serve God because he had sent them such happiness. When the girl was 3 years old, her parents brought her to the temple in Jerusalem. It was there that Maria was raised along with other girls, did needlework, studied the Holy Scriptures and spent her free time in prayer.
Tradition says that angels appeared to Mary, talked to her and even served her food. Until the age of 15, Mary lived in the temple, after which she was chosen as her husband by the pious Joseph, who remained a widower. It is known that the Feast of the Introduction itself was established during the period of early Christianity, but became widespread only in the 9th century. The Russian people shortened the name of the holiday “Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple” and began to call this day the Entry.
And our ancestors also believed that on this day Zimushka-winter herself was passing through the earth in her fur coat, white as snow. Her frosty breath weaved patterns on the window panes. This period was also known for thaws and frosts, as a result of which the roads either “seized” or “slipped.”
Signs of the day:
- If it snowed before the Introduction, it will melt, but after the Introduction, on the contrary, it will linger until spring.
- If the snow has not melted after the Introduction, expect a good grain harvest.
- A frosty day foreshadows a cold and snowy winter.
- If a person was born on December 4, then he is recommended to wear a diamond as a talisman.
- Frost and sun on this day were a good sign.
- Cloudy and warm weather means there will be a crop failure.
- The real winter has come — we can hope for a good harvest.
- Clear weather predicts crop failure, and vice versa.
- Frost on December 4 — the summer of next year will be very hot, and the coming holidays will be cold.
- The ringing of bells can be heard from afar — there will be frost, and if the ringing is dull, then it predicts snowfall.
- If the millet porridge turns brown in the oven, snow will fall.
- The horse is stubborn — a sign that snow will fall soon.
