Do it: almost every second Russian plans to study a foreign language in 2024

More and more Russians are learning foreign languages: Avito Services has recorded an increase in demand for language tutors since 2020, and it continued in 2024. Avito Services surveyed 10 thousand respondents throughout Russia and found that 44% of Russians plan to start learning at least one foreign language in 2024. Traditionally, English is the most popular language: almost every third (29%) respondent plans to study it this year. In second place is Chinese (7%). The Russian top also included French and German (4% each), Italian and Spanish (3% of respondents each) and Japanese (2%) languages.

The market for teaching and learning foreign languages in Russia is very vibrant. Over the past month, Russians’ interest in foreign languages has increased by one and a half times (+54%), and the number of teacher advertisements on the platform has increased by 18% compared to the same period last year. According to our data, a third of respondents choose a specific tutor only after several lessons, when they notice progress. When choosing a specialist on Avito Services, we advise you to pay attention to customer reviews, choose only those with positive reviews, and also be interested in professional training certificates.
Why do Russians learn languages?
68% of respondents want to learn a foreign language for personal development, 38% for travel, 19% for communicating with foreigners, 18% for work, and only 9% for study. Among respondents who study languages for travel, the majority are zoomers 18-24 years old (44%) and representatives of the older generation — over 65 years old (40%).
How to find tutors
38% of respondents plan to study their chosen language through online courses, and 63% on their own through apps. Only a fifth (21%) of respondents prefer face-to-face group classes. 32% of respondents choose a specific tutor only after several lessons, when they feel their progress.
The market for tutors in European languages. English language tutors remain the most sought-after specialists in the field. Demand for them continues to grow — this January they were searched for 10% more often than last year.
In the same time demand for Chinese amounted to 15% year on year. The demand for learning Chinese grew most actively in Novosibirsk (+221%), Rostov-on-Don (+215%) and Khabarovsk (+171%).
