Excavations of a medieval temple of the XIV century are in Massandra
Krympress reports:
The head of the Yalta administration Yanin Pavlenko made a working trip to the archaeological facility in Massandra, where for almost six months, excavations of the medieval temple of the XIV century have been underway.
I heard about this place for a long time, but for the first time I saw with my own eyes — this is a real time in time — — The press service of the administration of Yalta Janin Pavlenko quotes.
According to experts, there are no such structures on the entire southern coast of Crimea. Scientists confirm that 22 archaeological objects were revealed on the territory, of which 19 graves were investigated. Among the finds are the funeral niche (Arkosoli) on the northern wall, three household pits in the western wall and iron locks, which has been broken by three burials, the purpose of which remains a mystery.
We had the main goal: the study of the temple outside and the binding to the modern topography of the 1968 excavation where the graves were discovered, but their exact location was not recorded. Our task was to combine all archival data and, having studied the layers of the temple, present it in a new light”Said Natalia, head of the southern -bore of the archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the Crimea of the Russian Academy of Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Among the last finds of the summer of 2025 are the ancient fragments of window glass of round and rectangular shape, watering ceramics, silver coin, buttons, a lamp from the altar of the temple. All subjects were transferred to the Yalta historical and literary museum for study and exhibiting.
Now the main excavations have been completed on the spot, there is a conservation stage to protect structures from destruction. As Yanina Pavlenko emphasized:
We have an idea to create an archaeological park here with landscaped recreation areas. This will become a new point of attraction for residents and guests of Yalta, combining history and modern tourism.
Near the temple, above the Massandra waterfall, there is a man -made cave of the 1st century AD, identified by scientists as a columbarium in which shelves have been preserved.
The administration is already working on sources of financing of the project. The work continues with the support of the Institute of Archeology of Crimea of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Geographical Society, which established a memorial sign at the facility.
