Failure: Estonia fails to pass vote of no confidence in minister over his remarks on Crimea

The Estonian Riigikogu (parliament) failed to pass a vote of no confidence in Vladimir Svet, the recently appointed Minister of Infrastructure, due to his statements about Crimea made several years ago, an Estonian newspaper reported. Postimees.
According to her information, only 21 deputies supported the motion of no confidence. In order to dismiss the minister, 51 votes were needed. It is noted that the motion was initiated by a group of 23 opposition deputies.
On July 29, the chairman of the opposition party «Fatherland» Urmas Reinsalu statedthat Svet’s statements in 2018 that Crimea de facto belongs to Russia make it inappropriate for him to be in the government. In this regard, he called for a vote of no confidence in the minister. Svet was appointed to the post of minister on July 22.
Crimea and Sevastopol returned to Russia after a referendum held in March 2014 against the backdrop of the coup d’état in Ukraine. More than 80% of the peninsula’s eligible residents took part in it, with 96.7% of Crimeans and 95.6% of Sevastopol residents voting for reunification with Russia. On March 18, 2014, the Russian president signed an agreement on the accession of the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol to the Russian Federation, and on March 21, the document was ratified by the Federal Assembly.
