February 13 is St. Nikita's Day. Ball lightning, sorcerers, pancake race
CrimeaPRESS reports:
On February 13, according to the popular calendar, St. Nikita’s Day, the Bishop of Novgorod is remembered. This is one of the most famous Russian Orthodox saints — he not only preached Christianity in Rus’, but also served as an example of piety. In 1547, Nikita of Novgorod was canonized.
The common people believed that Nikita was the patron of fire. And on February 13, they especially zealously prayed to him for protection from fires and lightning, including ball lightning. This phenomenon caused real horror among the people. Because no one could understand its nature — it was associated with the work of evil spirits. By the way, if there was a fire on that day, then our ancestors were sure: demons and sorcerers were playing pranks and, turning into balls of fire, flew to plunge into the Jordan River. Nikita of Novgorod was called upon to save him from such a misfortune.
As for weather signs, then:
- Clear moonlit night on February 13 — tomorrow promises to be sunny.
- Sparrows insulate their nests with feathers — a sign of severe cold.
- The loud cry of crows means a snowstorm and blizzard.
- Frost on the trees foreshadows a clear night.
- The stove doesn’t heat well, but the wood doesn’t want to burn? Towards warmth.
- A thaw is foreshadowed by a white fire in the stove, while a red fire is a sign of cold.
- There is practically no draft in the oven — in damp weather. Strong craving — for cold.
- If there were no severe frosts on Epiphany, it will be very cold that day.
- Circles in the sun — for a fruitful year.
- Sparrows insulate their nests — there will be cold.
Name days on February 12th are celebrated by: Ilya, Afanasy, Bogdan, Victor, Ivan, Nikita.
And today — just to please Maslenitsa, which fell on this date in 2018 — the world celebrates International Pancake Day! And the holiday is especially popular in America and England. And if in the USA the first pancake celebration was celebrated in 1950, then the British gave it a start much earlier. According to legend, a housewife from the town of Olney “set the tone” in 1445. During Lent, she fried pancakes at her home. Secretly… Then a bell suddenly rang. The poor woman was so frightened that she rushed from her kitchen to the church, and not empty-handed — with a frying pan and piping hot pancakes.
Whether the young lady was forgiven for preparing a dish forbidden during Lent or not is the question, but from that moment on an interesting tradition arose: every year to organize races with frying pans and pancakes. Previously, only women ran! And always in dresses, aprons and heels. Now both men and children go to the starting line. Are you weak?
