February 18 — Trojan Winter, day of commemoration of the dead, Agafya cow

The ancestors of our Slavs on February 18 celebrated Trojan Winter. This is the day of celebration of heroes who were able to defend their lands at the invincible Roman legionnaires. The exact date of the battle in the Dunay region, at the Trojan shaft (etymology of the name has not yet been clarified) was lost for centuries — historians suggest that the event occurred around 101 years of era. But this glorious episode was described in the Veles Book, as well as in the Word of Igor’s Regiment:

After all, the Romans envied us and planned evil on us — they came with their carts and iron armor and hit us, and therefore fought off them for a long time and threw them away from our land; And the Romans, seeing that we were firmly defending our lives, left us … And they were flying on the trip to the trip, and Stribogov’s grandchildren are dancing over them and crying about them in the fall, and in the winter they worship them. Troyanov day in Rus’ was considered one of the greatest military celebrations. In the evening, a large feast was arranged: the Slavs remembered those to whom they owed their freedom.

As for the martyr Agafia, whose memory believers revere on February 18. She was the daughter of eminent and rich Christian parents. The family lived in the Sicilian city of Palermo. According to legend, during the persecution of Christians under the emperor of decisions (249-251), the girl was tortured for her faith. In Rus’, the name of the holy “Agafia” was transformed into a more familiar hearing — Agafya, and accompanied the prefix “Corovnits”, because it was believed that it patronizes the cattle. She was prayed for the health of pets, asking them to save them from the evil eye and damage.
