February 19 is Vukol Day. Say a word about dolphins and whales
CrimeaPRESS reports:
February 19 is marked in the Christian calendar as the Day of Bucolus of Smyrna, who is famous for being the first bishop to serve in Asia Minor. Also among his merits is the fact that at one time he baptized many pagans.
The people paid little attention to subtle religious aspects, and adapted calendar dates to their way of life. So, from the Day of Vukola they counted in the villages — calving time began. The peasants said: “Jukols were born on Vukol” (calves that were born in February).
And the weather on February 19 was also, of course, predicted, but there were few signs:
- If the frost is cracking, spring will come very soon, and summer will be rainless and very hot.
- Cold Vukol brings March warmth.
- Frosty day — summer will be good, and the grain harvest will be rich.
- Fog on this day means summer will be full of mushrooms and fruitful for nuts.
Name days are celebrated today by: Christina, Martha, Maria, Anatoly, Alexander, Arseny, Dmitry, Vasily, Ivan, Maxim, Julian, Sevastyan.
And February 19 is also listed in the world calendar as the Day for the Protection of Whale and Dolphins. Established to confirm the decision to ban whale fishing, adopted in 1986. From then on… officially… whale fishing is only allowed for scientific purposes in Japan. However, unfortunately, the world is not without poachers, so both whales and dolphins continue to die. In addition… seemingly legitimate human activity… also makes a negative contribution to the lives of the inhabitants of the seas and oceans: oil production, for example, entails large losses of mammals. Animals simply cannot live in polluted water.
