On February 2, according to folk beliefs, cold weather is set. On the day of the winter Efimiya (blizzard) in Rus’, they were judged, what will be the whole current month, and the Shrovetide week, which is no longer around the corner.

• If the marmot of February 2 does not see its shadow and leaves the hole, then winter will end soon and early spring will come;
• If on February 2 there will be the sun and marglass, seeing its shadow, will hide again in its hole, then winter will last another six weeks.

By the way, this tradition is the continuation of the story associated with the long -term forecasts “from animals” that were made in ancient Rome. There, every year on February 2, Hedgehog’s Day was celebrated. Then it was this animal that was supposed to figure out his shadow and “announce” the spring.
