February 20 is the Day of Luka, Magic Potentilla, Lollipop Cockerels and Onion Pies
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Christians celebrate St. Luke of Greece Day on February 20th. This Greek monk, the founder of the monastery Hosios Loukas, has earned fame over the centuries for his piety.
In Rus’, St. Luke’s Day was famous for the fact that housewives baked pies with onion filling and treated them to the poor. It was believed that the more alms you give on February 20, the more you will receive later. They also carried several pies outside the threshold: this is how they fed deceased relatives, since these days are funeral days. It was customary to go to church, pray for the dead, visiting their graves. People used to say: “If your parents are alive, honor them; if they are dead, remember them.”
Our ancestors also called today the Mighty Day. The name of the holiday comes from a grass with cross-shaped leaves — cinquefoil. Those in the know assure: products prepared from this plant on February 20 for treatment and other needs acquire extraordinary… literally — magical… healing power.
As for weather signs, then:
- The sun turns red at sunset — summer will be cool.
- The wind at noon promises a good harvest of grain crops this year.
- Thunder rumbles — there will be bad haymaking.
- The clouds are colored blue — the weather will be warm.
- It begins to melt on Luka from the north — towards warm summer.
Name days are celebrated today by: Alexander, Luka, Peter.
And on February 20 we celebrate Candy Cockerel Day! The same ones… from childhood… multi-colored… on sticks! A simple candy, loved by children and adults, was “born” several centuries ago. In Russia, the candy is already 500 years old — there are corresponding mentions in the chronicles. By the way, initially this delicacy made from burnt sugar was also a medicine: it was used as a cough remedy. Also, “cockerels” acted as baby pacifiers (until caries began to terrify people).
