February 23 — Prokhor Day, Defender of the Fatherland Day

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Prokhor Day was also popularly called Prokhor-Spring. The reason is that the sun is rising higher and higher above the horizon, the length of the day is increasing, and the frost is about to begin to recede.

Weather signs for today (though there are few of them):

  • A clear month on Prokhora — there will be thunderstorms.
  • If the weather is frosty on Prokhora and in the next 6 days, it will be warm in March.
  • The cold is on February 23, then you shouldn’t be afraid of it: “Winter is angry with Prokhor, but he senses spring.”
  • It is believed that from this day the frosts begin to weaken: “Prokhor came — spring looked into the yard.”

And… Prokhor, whom we commemorate with kind words today, is a monk of the Pechersk Monastery. He led an ascetic lifestyle and ate bread made exclusively from quinoa. During famine, he distributed it to the disadvantaged. And the bread was tasty and sweet. But only if it was taken with blessing. If a person tried to steal bread, it was impossible to eat it — it became bitter and black. This miracle glorified Prokhor Lebednik throughout the centuries.

Name days are celebrated today by: Ivan, Gennady, Vasily, Anna, Valentina, Galina, German, Karp, Grigory, Anton.

And, of course, February 23 is one of the days of military glory of Russia. A holiday for everyone who defends their Fatherland. It is generally accepted that the Red Guard detachments won their first victories over German troops near Narva and Pskov on February 23, 1918. These victories began to be called the “Birthday of the Red Army.” In 1922, this date was officially designated as Red Army Day. In 1946, the holiday was renamed the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy, and after the collapse of the USSR in 1995, the date was turned into Defender of the Fatherland Day.

To the rich history of the holiday, let’s add the fact that the celebration has long “spread out” beyond the purely military framework — in fact, today we are celebrating the Day of Real Men and Defenders in the broadest sense of the word.
