February 23 — Prokhor's Day and Defender Day of the Fatherland
Krympress reports:
Prokhor’s Day was popularly called Prokhor-Vesnov. The reason-the sun rises above the horizon, the duration of the day increases, and frosts are about to begin to retreat.
Weather signs for today (though there are few of them):
- A clear month on Prokhor — there will be thunderstorms.
- If the weather is frosty on Prokhor and the next 6 days — in March it will be warm.
- A cold on February 23, then she should not be afraid: «Winter is angry with Prokhor, but spring is smoking.»
- It is believed that from this day frosts begin to weaken: «Prokhor came — spring looked into the yard.»
And … Prokhor, whom we remember today with a kind word, is the monk of the Pechersk monastery. He led an ascetic lifestyle and ate bread made exclusively from quinoa. He, during hunger, distributed him disadvantaged. And there was delicious bread and sweet. But only if he was taken with blessings. If a person tried to steal bread, that is, it was impossible — he became bitter and black. This miracle glorified Prokhor of the Legistan for centuries.
Name days today they note: Ivan, Gennady, Vasily, Anna, Valentina, Galina, Herman, Carp, Gregory, Anton.
And, of course, February 23 is one of the days of military glory of Russia. The holiday of everyone who protects their fatherland. It is generally accepted that the Red Guard detachments on February 23, 1918 won the first victories over the troops of Germany near Narva and Pskov. These victories began to be called the «Birthday of the Red Army.» In 1922, this date was officially designated — the day of the Red Army. In 1946, the holiday was renamed the day of the Soviet Army and Navy, and after the collapse of the USSR in 1995, the date was turned on the day of the defender of the Fatherland.
To the rich history of the holiday, we add the fact that the celebration has long “splashed out” beyond the exclusively military — in fact, today we celebrate the day of real men and defenders in the broadest sense of the word.
