On Alexei Rybny Day (famous statesman of the 14th century, diplomat, Metropolitan of Moscow and All Rus’) it was common among people to “freeze” seeds — they exposed them to the cold. The villagers believed that such “hardening” would guarantee better germination.
People also called these days “fish days.” Housewives baked pies filled with fish. There were also numerous signs by which fishermen determined when there would be a good bite and good luck.
- Fogs on Alexei’s Day — summer will be rainy.
- Blizzard – there will be a lot of precipitation in the summer.
- There are stars in the sky — you will be able to reap a rich harvest.
- The icicles hang long — you can count on a good harvest of vegetables.
- Streams began to flow — a sign that the fish will be caught well.
- Cold day — spring will come early and be warm.
