On February 26, Christians honor St. Martinian’s memory. He lived in the 5th century in Palestine, was a hermit and, to terrifying worldly passions, led a recluse life. He stayed on a deserted mountain in the vicinity of Caesarea for 25 years. There, according to legend, the first miracle happened: Martinian stood in front of the spell, who was trying to seduce him, the brewer of Zoe. Passion pacified, standing barefoot into the fire. After such an event, the temptress turned to God. Martinian, wanting to protect himself with even greater privacy, went to the sea. He settled on a bare cliff, surrounded on all sides with water, where he lived for six years — he was delivered to him a shipbuilder who transferred him to a rock. Hermit ended after the disaster of a passing ship. Everyone was killed on the ship except Fotini — a woman who got out to the cliff to Martinian. Realizing that the “worldly passion” could overtake him here, the saint rushed into the sea and a miracle, with the help of dolphins, survived. Since then, this saint is considered a tamer of passions.

In Rus’, Martinian was renamed Martyn, and on February 26 it turned into Martyn’s day. Our ancestors also prayed to the saint for protection against temptations and carnal temptations. In addition, it was customary to recall the other relatives who had gone into the world, visit cemeteries, put candles in churches for the rest.

The people believed that frosts begin to weaken on this day, and spring is more and more “spilling” in the air.
