Find out all the secrets of the Inkerman Valley at the new exhibition at the Tauride Chersonese Museum-Reserve

On February 29, the exhibition “Secrets of the Inkerman Valley” opened in the temporary exhibition hall of the Ancient Exposition of the State Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve “Chersonese Tauride”. Its visitors were able to immerse themselves in the past of the region and find out what mysteries one of the most picturesque places in the vicinity of modern Sevastopol holds.
The first guests of the exhibition appreciated rare printed publications from the collection of the library of Tauride Chersonese, archival photographs and, of course, authentic archaeological finds! Visitors were presented with sketches of views of Inkerman and descriptions of ancient monuments made by travelers of the late 18th-19th centuries, as well as graphic works by participants in museum expeditions of the 1950s-1960s. As part of the exhibition, it was possible to get acquainted with the Christian antiquities of the region, where the undisputed dominant feature is the restored St. Clement Monastery.
The finds and photographs presented at the exhibition were made during the period of the most extensive research of the monuments of the Inkerman Valley. These are objects from the settlement of Uch-Bash — a very important monument of the Kizil-Koba culture of the second half of the 11th — early 7th centuries. BC e., and from the burial ground “Sovkhoz-10” (“Sevastopol”), which dates back to the ancient period. The landscape dominant of the valley can rightly be called the Monastery Rock, on the top of which are the majestic ruins of the Kalamita fortress. And the book monuments that are stored in our scientific library can show how the traveler’s view has changed since the turn of the 18th–19th centuries. to the beginning of the 21st century, what has changed and what has remained unchanged“, — Victoria Nessel, curator of the exhibition, head of the antiquities department of the museum-reserve, said at the opening.
