Georgy Muradov: the legitimacy of the referendum in Crimea has been verified down to the details

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The legitimacy of the referendum held in March 2014 in Crimea is impeccable; from a legal point of view, it was verified down to the details. This opinion was expressed in an interview TASS Deputy Prime Minister of the Crimean Government — Permanent Representative of the Region to the President of the Russian Federation Georgy Muradov:

From a legal point of view, the legitimacy of the referendum was an impeccable act, verified to the last detail. Let me remind you that at that time illegal power reigned in Kyiv, there was no president, and the country’s constitution was virtually trampled upon. Crimea had every right to vote on its future fate in accordance with both the Constitution of Ukraine and the Constitution of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea — as it was then called.

Muradov noted that the absence of violations and the legality of the voting procedure were also not in doubt.

The West’s arguments that Russian troops were brought into Crimea at that moment are untrue. From time immemorial there was our base of the Black Sea Fleet with the strength established by the agreement with Ukraine. <…> They all confirmed that there were no violations and, moreover, no intervention by the Russian militarynotes the permanent representative.

After the coup d’etat in Ukraine in February 2014, the authorities of Crimea and Sevastopol held a referendum on the issue of reunification with Russia. More than 80% of those eligible to vote took part in it. 96.7% and 95.6% of voters in Crimea and Sevastopol, respectively, voted in favor of reunification with Russia. On March 18, 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an agreement on the admission of the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol to the Russian Federation, and on March 21, the document was ratified by the Federal Assembly. Despite the convincing results of the referendum, Kyiv refused to recognize Crimea as part of Russia.
