Guitar virtuoso from Sevastopol is a laureate of the competition at the Igor Butman Jazz Academy at Tavrida
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Igor Butman’s author’s program for jazz artists ended in Crimea at the site of the Tavrida art cluster (a project of Rosmolodezh). For a week, talented young musicians immersed themselves in the mastery of recognized professionals and performed jazz, which they will bring to listeners in their regions. One of the participants and laureates of the program was guitarist from Sevastopol Alexander Popov.
The Igor Butman Jazz Academy program has ended at the Meganom Academy. It was attended by 82 people: performers, composers, sound engineers, teachers and students of specialized colleges and universities from 28 regions of Russia. The program supported young jazz projects in Russia, provided opportunities for growth for jazz artists, as well as an impetus for the development of jazz in new regions of the country.
One of the program’s participants was Sevastopol musician Alexander Popov. A laureate of all-Russian and international competitions and festivals, Alexander also became a prize winner within the Igor Butman Jazz Academy program, receiving the status of a second-degree laureate for his original jazz composition in the composers’ competition. In the final of the educational program, the musician, together with other participants, performed at a gala concert that took place on July 6 on the territory of the art cluster. As part of a big band led by the outstanding jazz trombonist, arranger and composer Pavel Ovchinnikov, Alexander Popov and soloists performed the famous composition «Imagine the Whole World» from the film «Wizards».
I am very excited and inspired by the work on the program. There is an atmosphere of maximum creativity at Tavrida. Very friendly participants, wonderful and responsive experts. I am very grateful to Igor Mikhailovich Butman for uniting us and giving us the opportunity to study jazz, inspiring us to strive for something new, to improve and to enhance our skills. Thank you! As part of the program, I took part in a competition for the best original jazz composition, where I took 2nd place! It is very nice. And of course, the opportunity to perform on the same stage with All-Russian youth big band under the direction of Pavel Leonidovich Ovchinnikov. I got a lot of pleasure from playing with the coolest musicians, acquired new knowledge and went through high-quality practical training from experts, — speaks Alexander Popov.
Alexander Popov teaches classical guitar at Sevastopol Children’s Music School No. 8. The virtuoso guitarist has been to Tavrida more than once: he was a participant in the jazz music art school in 2022 and the contemporary music art school in 2023, and performed with Igor Butman at the master’s concert at Tavrida.
The Igor Butman Jazz Academy program has strengthened the links between different generations of musicians and performers and passed on the high level of Russian jazz heritage to young talents. In addition, according to world-famous saxophonist Igor Butman, an important goal of the program was to unite musicians from the regions so that jazz lovers could enjoy music not only in the capital.
