History: in Yalta they honored the memory of the victims of the tragedy of the motor ship «Armenia»
CrimeaPRESS reports:
This year marks 83 years since the tragic death of the ambulance ship, which was sunk by the Nazis off the coast of Yalta. According to various sources, there could be up to ten thousand people on board the ship — wounded soldiers, doctors, evacuated local residents, including women and children. The exact number of victims rescued, as well as their names, are currently unknown.
This is a page of our heroic and tragic past, our glorious history. We must not forget about its tragic pages, because something like this should never happen again. Today our hearts are filled with pain, we bow our heads in memory of the dead, and at the same time we bow before the feat of the Soviet people, who crushed the enemy in the Great Patriotic War— the press service quotes the chairman of the Public Council, Honorary Citizen of Yalta Lyudmila Kovaleva.
Every year we gather at this place to remember that terrible day when the ship “Armenia” sank, where thousands of innocent people died. This day is sacred for us, we mourn and remember those who died and ask the younger generation to always remember thisnotes Deputy Head of Administration Renard Kutkovsky.
For many years, the location of the sunken ship remained unknown. It was discovered in 2020 during a joint expedition of the Ministry of Defense and the Underwater Research Center of the Russian Geographical Society. During one of the dives, a ship’s bell with the name of the ship was raised to the surface, thanks to which it was finally confirmed that it was “Armenia” that was found. Subsequently, the bell was transferred for eternal storage to the Yalta Historical and Literary Museum, and its exact copy was installed on the wall of the Chapel of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.
Traditionally, on the Yalta embankment, the dean of the Yalta church district, Archpriest Adam, served a prayer service for the repose of the victims of “Armenia” and all our compatriots who died during the war, followed by a minute of silence.
Of course, this is a terrible tragedy for all of us, which we must remember. The duty of young people is to know and remember the history of our country, our native land. We remember,” said Deputy Chairman of the Yalta City Council Evgeniy Khrychev, concluding his speech.
At the end, the participants of the event traditionally lowered wreaths and flowers into the sea.
