How to clean a mattress yourself

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Getting rid of stains from your mattress yourself

According to statistics, a person spends more than 30% of his life on his bed. It is not surprising that it is this part of the home that wears out the most, and it always needs to be maintained in proper condition. If you can refresh your bed linen simply by washing it, then with a mattress everything is much more complicated. By studying the recommendations presented below, you can get rid of different types of dirt and return the mattress to its former attractiveness and, most importantly, cleanliness. The article uses the opinion of an expert on the company’s cleaning services Double cleaning — Anastasia Velikoselskikh.

General principles of mattress care

Before you start cleaning a stain, you need to study the key care rules in order to be aware of certain features of specific materials and know how to maintain them to prevent contamination. The filler is the basis of absolutely any product. It is made from different materials, therefore it reacts differently to contact with water. Some love moisture, while others do not perceive it. It is for this reason that you need to know how to properly handle this or that product model.

So, the following types of raw materials used for the production of mattresses are distinguished:

  • cotton wool;
  • coconut (coir);
  • latex.

Cotton models are characterized by good odor absorption for a long time, so they should be regularly ventilated. This should be done at least once a month. In addition, they are easily deformed, so turning them twice a month is required, at a minimum. Such mattresses are not afraid of moisture, so the number of ways to clean them is almost unlimited.

Coconut mattresses are usually characterized by an increased degree of strength, but the design does not tolerate excess moisture, so manufacturers recommend cleaning them exclusively using the dry method.

Latex materials traditionally contain a spring-based element in their composition; they require ventilation and the use of a vacuum cleaner every time after changing bed linen. Wet cleaning is, of course, acceptable, but the water should not penetrate deep inside.

What types of pollution are there?

Since there are no universal methods for cleaning mattresses, in each specific case you need to choose a separate method. To solve this problem, you need to familiarize yourself with the types of pollution:

  • traces of cosmetics and grease stains;
  • mold residues;
  • blood stains;
  • all kinds of smells;
  • faded circles;
  • urine.

Cosmetics and fat

Complete cleaning, that is, immersing the entire mattress in water is not required here; you can act in a targeted manner, for this it is enough to use an ordinary solution based on lemon juice and salt. First, the ingredients are mixed together until a paste forms, then the resulting composition is applied to the stains and remains on them for 2 hours, after which the composition is washed off with a damp cloth.

It is best to remove fresh stains, since they have not yet had time to be fully absorbed into the material. To remove a wet stain that has barely appeared, you can use baking soda; you can simply apply it to the stain and do nothing else, leaving it overnight and then rinsing off whatever remains with water.

Mold and mildew

Liquids of increased aggressiveness will help; it is not difficult to include vinegar or alcohol. To do this, you need to absorb a small amount of the selected product into a sponge, which is then used to wash the stains. Immediately after drying, the mattress is thoroughly vacuumed. To remove mold 100%, you can spray the damaged areas with a disinfectant composition, and then dry the product outside. But it should be noted that removing such stains on your own is very problematic; in most cases, you will need to contact a professional service.

Blood

In this case, hot water is not used, because when it interacts with an organic liquid, coagulation will occur, and as a result, it will be even more difficult to remove the stain. It is best to use hydrogen peroxide; simply apply it to the affected area and leave it there for a maximum of 5 minutes. During the action of the substance, foam will appear, and it can be removed with a regular napkin (dry).

Odor removal

Different fillers absorb certain odors differently. In some situations, it is enough to simply ventilate the product, and sometimes you cannot do without professional cleaning. To make the mattress fresher, you can use a fragrant block, which is applied using a spray bottle. After this, the mattress is dried and then exposed to a vacuum cleaner.

Removing faded circles

It is best to use a special stain remover, which is sold in the household chemicals department of any store. Among the available means, you can prepare a solution based on soda, liquid soap and hydrogen peroxide. If the tench has penetrated deeply, even professional remedies may not help.

Removing traces of urine

Such stains are considered the most persistent and unpleasant. Experts from our company know what and how to apply to get rid of them. In this case, a complete rinsing of the mattress will be required. On the Internet you can find a large number of videos using various reagents. These include, for example, baking soda or Vanish. But it is much easier to remove the stain itself, which is the source of the unpleasant odor. This can be done using the extractor method, which, in turn, involves the use of special equipment. After all, it is very problematic to cope with the solution of the task on your own, so it is better to act correctly right away, that is, to involve professionals, so that later you do not have to redo everything, spending time, effort and money.
