June 16, 2023 Artek International Children’s Center celebrates its 98th birthday — Click here for photos and details of the event.. More than 3,000 children from different regions of Russia, as well as India, Kazakhstan and South Africa take part in the festive events. And together with them, the Land of Childhood is congratulated by thousands of Artek residents of different generations around the world.
The festive day began with solemn lines in all the children’s camps of Artek, including its first child, in Morskoy, which also celebrates its birthday. It was here that 98 years ago, with four canvas tents and the first line, the history of the Land of Childhood began.
The children took part in the ceremony of raising the State Flag of the Russian Federation and sang the national anthem together. In a solemn atmosphere, the flag of Artek was raised — for many years this ritual confirms loyalty to traditions, symbolizes the unity and strength of the Artek brotherhood.
Addressing the pupils of the children’s center, the director of «Artek» Konstantin Fedorenko noted:
The history of Artek is closely connected with the history of our country. For 98 years, with their work, deeds, and actions, Artek residents have proved that they deserve to bear this high title. Today I congratulate each of you. I wish you to carry the motto «Artek citizen today — Artek citizen always» through your whole life. Remember that Russia believes in you. I am sure that you will succeed.
By tradition, special wishes were addressed to those who were born on the same day as Artek.
Today is my birthday, as well as the birthday of Artek and Morskoy. They gave me a gift, congratulated the whole camp, it’s very nice— said Danila Sennikov from Khabarovsk.
Artek’s birthday continued on the embankment of the children’s center, where the grandiose City of Masters «Pages of the Chronicle of Creativity» unfolded. The tone for the holiday of friendship and creativity was set by a fast and bright composition of drummers. Here, every Artek citizen could try his hand at creative, sports and educational activities.
The children were presented with 65 stations, including sites for local history, e-sports, badminton, darts, volleyball, golf, and football. In the workshops, Artek residents prepared postcards “Happy Birthday, Artek!”, were engaged in sewing, burning, embroidery, quilling, beading, DJing. Curious schoolchildren discovered a lot of new things at such stations as astronomy, aircraft modeling, auto business, archeology, and ecology.
I was at an aeromodelling station where I made a small airplane with my own hands. I learned a lot of new information for myself, what parts the plane consists of and how it is assembled correctly. On my birthday, I wish Artek to always be as beautiful— said Elisey Vasiliev, Cheboksary.
The historical direction was widely represented: pupils of the children’s center walked the «Artek routes», studied the «literary map of Artek», sang Artek songs and learned Artek games.
I learned that many authors of famous works had visited the Crimea and Artek. Here were Pushkin, Green, Mikhalkov and other famous authors. I love Artek, so I visited all the venues dedicated to the history of the Land of Childhood. I wish Artek new achievements and cheerful children— shared Semyon Roman, Zelenogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Territory.
A separate direction was occupied by the marine theme — those who wished could feel like cabin boys and master rigging, semaphore, knot technology.
All stations with a maritime theme have a special place in my heart. I have already been to the semaphore station, where I learned to show different words and knit sea knots, mastered the rigging. On my birthday, I wish Artek to always strive for the best and develop further— wished Varvara Koval, Vladivostok.
The performances of young artists left no one indifferent: there were solo performances by three brass bands — participants in the thematic program of the Association of Brass Bands and Performers on Wind and Percussion Instruments «Valery Khalilov Brass Society». The St. Petersburg Children’s School of Arts named after M.I. Glinka, Federal Agency for Nationalities Affairs, «Academy of Ceramics», Charitable Foundation «Paritet», Medical Unit for the Republic of Crimea, Foundation for Support of International Children’s and Youth Initiatives «Commonwealth».
At the same time, a real competition unfolded in the waters of the Artek — both Artek marine programs and experienced specialists demonstrated their ability to manage various watercraft. The holiday reminded the children about the history of the creation of the Russian fleet and about who stood at its origins — Emperor Peter the Great, and also gave the children an idea of modern maritime programs using the example of Artek specialized detachments and sections.
We are building in front of the detachments stationed on the embankment. Yuri Gagarin, passed an exact copy of the small boat of Peter I, the schooner «Saint Tatiana», the cruising yacht «Kruiz», 16 yachts «Optimist», 6 yawls. In addition, boats from the Russian Guard, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the border service of the Russian Federal Security Service and friends from the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation joined the Artek flotilla on the birthday. Thus, the Khersones frigate and a fire-fighting ship came from Sevastopol to visit the pupils of the children’s center, which demonstrated its capabilities to the audience. The guys greeted the vessels of the Artek fleet and their guests with joyful exclamations.
Then a demonstration race of ships by class took place at sea. Yachts, yawls and kayaks started, overcame the distance between the buoys and finished in the port of Artek. The audience saw the training and skill of young athletes, and the race itself gave the participants a charge of emotions.
I liked the parade, especially the ship with scarlet sails, because it is exactly how I imagined it when I read Alexander Grin’s book. I am very happy that I am celebrating Artek’s birthday here, because some special atmosphere appears from this holiday. I wish prosperity to Artek so that it continues to delight the children of Russia, — shared Alena Popova, Perm.
The sea show of numerous ships became the climax of the whole solemn action. The holiday dedicated to Artek’s birthday will end with the «Meeting Before Parting», the solemn oath of the Artek residents, in which all the guys promise each other to keep the friendship found here and to be true to the motto «Artek citizen today — Artek citizen always».
