Illness won't ruin your vacation: how to protect your child from rotavirus
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Summer is a happy time of holidays. Children wait all year to go to the sea, to the country or to grandma’s in the village, when they can play with friends all day long, swim and sunbathe, forget about teachers at school or educators at kindergarten. But parents cannot remain so carefree, because they must do everything possible to ensure that the child has a good rest, gains strength, and most importantly, avoids illness. And this is not an easy task, especially this summer. Since the beginning of the hot season, doctors have noted the rapid spread of rotavirus — a dangerous infection that many tend to underestimate, perceiving it as a common intestinal disorder. But this is a misconception. Rotavirus is a serious threat to health. And, first of all, to the health of children. Let’s find out more about it.
How can you get infected with rotavirus?
Rotavirus is a very insidious infection. Although in most cases the infection occurs through contact and household contact, through unwashed hands, poorly washed fruits and vegetables, unboiled water, etc., it can also be transmitted by airborne droplets.
Who is most at risk from rotavirus?
At risk, first of all, are children, especially small ones, under 5 years old. Some even mistakenly consider rotavirus to be an exclusively childhood infection, which is not true — adults can also become infected. However, it is for children with weak immune systems that the virus is most dangerous. Penetrating the gastrointestinal tract, rotavirus attacks the mucous membrane, which leads to problems with water absorption. Dehydration of a weak child’s body due to vomiting and diarrhea is a serious threat — children have to be hospitalized much more often than adults to avoid the most unfavorable consequences, including death.
How to protect yourself from rotavirus
Chief pediatric allergist-immunologist of the Ministry of Health of the Moscow Region, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Andrey Petrovich Prodeus I am sure that the best protection against the virus is vaccination. However, the rotavirus vaccine has not yet been included in the National Immunization Schedule (this will happen in 2025), vaccination is carried out on a paid basis, and therefore, unfortunately, only a very limited number of people use this method. If infection cannot be avoided, then drug treatment can help — symptomatic therapy and antiviral drugs. These include, for example, the drug umifenovir, better known in our country as Arbidol. As reported by «Arguments and Facts«, Arbidol effectively prevents the proliferation of the virus in the body, does not weaken the immune system, is characterized by a high safety profile and is approved for use in children over two years of age.
And, of course, we must not forget about personal hygiene. It is important to wash your hands thoroughly, rinse dishes, vegetables and fruits with hot water, regularly wipe door handles, children’s toys, gadgets, and other common items. Never drink raw water, beware of bodies of water where swimming is not allowed. Following these simple rules will ensure a healthy rest for the child and peace of mind for the parents.
