The Coordination Center for .RU/.РФ domains has published statistics on phishing resources blocked in the first half of 2024, Izvestia writes. They note that most often, attackers create fake sites of well-known brands in Russia. The leader among phishing blocked in the first half of 2024 is fake Sber sites — the bank was faked more than 4.2 thousand times. In second place is the online classifieds service Yula, which was faked more than 4 thousand times.
The top five also included Alfa Bank and Telegram, with 1.3 thousand and 455 blocked resources, respectively. In some cases, the attackers also faked foreign online services. For example, the hotel booking service Booking.
The main goal of phishing is to obtain user data, explained Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications.
In this case, we are talking about collecting sensitive information that will later allow them to achieve the main goal — stealing money. Therefore, it is not surprising that Sber is leading the rating. The number of bank users exceeds 100 million, and about 21 million people use it daily. By mimicking a well-known brand, fraudsters simply increase the reach of potential victims, and it is unlikely that they will abandon this strategy in the future– the deputy believes.
At the same time, Nemkin notes, the data from the Coordination Center confirms that phishing is very variable and adapts to the news agenda.
As we know, the Booking booking service left the Russian market, and this was successfully used by attackers who began to create fake pages of the site, “targeting” those citizens who do not follow the news agenda. This is probably the reason for the success of phishing — it uses the human factor. For example, phishing attacks carried out on the eve of major holidays are especially effective, when people in search of big discounts can forget about the rules of safe online use– the deputy said.
According to Nemkin, phishing, along with telephone fraud, will remain the key threat to Russians.
According to Avast, in the first quarter of this year, about 90% of cyberattacks on mobile devices were related to fraud, phishing and malicious advertising. But mass spam mailings are no longer surprising. Today, we can talk about the formation of a new trend — targeted phishing attacks that actively use social engineering methods. If phishing mailings used to be mass, today attackers have increasingly begun to build multi-level schemes for theft of funds, choosing the target audience in advance. At the same time, telephone fraud and similar malicious resources are increasingly combined, – the deputy said.
Nemkin noted that from a technical point of view, phishing sites are blocked quite quickly.
In 2024, the Ministry of Digital Development’s Anti-Phishing system blocked about 64,000 fake pages, and Roskomnadzor restricted access to 33,000 phishing resources in the first half of the year. However, blocking can hardly be considered an effective solution to the problem.he believes.
Nemkin noted that phishing will remain popular as long as users continue to fall for its tricks.
According to analysts, up to 50% of Russians cannot always distinguish a real site from a phishing one, and some of our citizens do not even know what it is— he said.
Since 2019, the Russian Ministry of Digital Development has been developing large-scale projects in the field of digital literacy, which will be useful for all categories of the population, Nemkin recalled.
