In Crimea and Sevastopol, rising prices for fruits and vegetables are explained by crop failure

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Prices for potatoes, vegetables and fruits have increased in Crimea and Sevastopol compared to 2023, despite the start of the harvest, according to Crimean statistics. The rise in prices is due to the fact that on the peninsula, due to frost and drought, the harvest volumes of many crops turned out to be much lower than in 2023; the deficit had to be filled with imported products, they explained TASS in the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Market of Sevastopol.

Analysis of the dynamics of prices for fruits and vegetables from the list of socially important food products for 2024 <...> coincides with the dynamics of these vegetables and fruits in the Republic of Crimea, the Southern Federal District and the Russian Federation as a whole. The heat had a negative impact on the harvest in Crimea in 2024. [На полуострове] early vegetables suffered the most: yield decreased by 20-40% depending on the type, fruit and berry crops lost no more than 10% of the yieldsays the department’s response to a TASS request.

They clarified that prices for potatoes, cabbage, onions, carrots, beets, tomatoes, cucumbers, and apples were analyzed.

According to data on website Directorate of the Federal State Statistics Service for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, since the beginning of the year in Crimea, potato prices have increased by almost 62%, and compared to September 2023 they are 54.4% higher. Prices for cabbage increased by 71.39% and 38.56%, respectively; prices for onions decreased slightly from the beginning of the year, but turned out to be 16.6% higher than in 2023. Prices for carrots remained almost unchanged, while prices for beets decreased compared to September 2023. The cost of tomatoes and cucumbers, having traditionally dropped by almost half compared to the winter, turned out to be 17% and 67% higher than in September 2023, respectively, and apples became 32% more expensive than at the beginning of 2024, and 21.9% more expensive. than a year ago.

In Sevastopol, according to Rosstat, the dynamics are more restrained: the price of potatoes is 40.55% higher than a year ago, for cabbage — by 38.25%, for onions — by 6%, for tomatoes — by 11%, for apples — by 19.27%, and the cost of beets and carrots even decreased — by about 4%. At the same time, the price of cucumbers has almost doubled.

Judging by the published statistics, in Crimea and Sevastopol there is also an increase in prices for grapes — 11.5% and 49.14%, respectively. It was previously reported that weather conditions on the peninsula affected the grape harvest.

About product supplies

As explained in the Sevastopol department, the vegetables and fruits grown on the peninsula do not meet the needs of the population, so they are imported from the territories of the Southern Federal District. “The main logistics route for the supply of goods to the city [Севастополь] is land. <…> Regional retail chains receive goods daily from distribution centers located in the Republic of Crimea. Deliveries are carried out without interruptions and in the required volume,” the department emphasized.

The question of the cost of food in Crimea and Sevastopol, as well as measures to curb price increases, has been raised on the peninsula throughout the 10 years after reunification with Russia. Ukraine, shortly after the Crimean spring, banned the supply of its products to the peninsula and destroyed existing logistics connections; the regions found themselves in a logistics impasse. The situation was resolved by the commissioning of the Crimean Bridge in 2018, the construction of wholesale distribution centers on the peninsula, and the opening of a land corridor bypassing the Sea of Azov in 2022.
