In Evpatoria they honored the memory of the Evpatoria landing
CrimeaPRESS reports:
In Evpatoria, police officers and cadets honored the memory of those killed during the Evpatoria landing during the Great Patriotic War.
Traditionally, on January 5, Evpatoria police officers, cadets and representatives of the public council and veterans’ organization honored the memory of the soldiers who died during the Second World War by laying flowers at the monument to fallen law enforcement officers erected at the chapel of St. George the Victorious.
On January 5, 1942, during the Great Patriotic War, in order to divert enemy forces from besieged Sevastopol and the Kerch Peninsula, a tactical naval landing of Soviet troops landed between the cities of Saki and Yevpatoria.
The Yevpatoria landing force consisted of a reinforced marine battalion. For several days the paratroopers fought fiercely with an enemy of superior strength. Out of 700 paratroopers, only a few survived. As part of the landing force, employees of the Evpatoria and Saki militia fought and died heroically in heavy battles. For helping the Black Sea sailors, most of the civilian population of Yevpatoria was shot on the spot. Nowadays the memorial complex “Red Hill” is located on this site.
The head of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Yevpatoria, police lieutenant colonel Evgeny Pilipenko, refreshed the memory of those present about the events of those heroic battles and called for honoring the memory of the dead by laying flowers.
Then police officers, police department veterans and cadets went to the monument to paratroopers erected on the coast. As a tribute to the memory of those who died in a fierce battle with the enemy, a wreath was laid at the monument to the Evpatoria landing.
