In Kerch, a visiting thief “specialized” in theft of electric bicycles

Kerch police officers quickly uncovered a series of thefts of electric bicycles.
The duty station of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Kerch received a number of statements from local residents about the theft of electric bicycles. According to the applicants, the vehicles were stolen by damaging the anti-theft security cable. The total damage amounted to 120 thousand rubles.
As a result of operational search activities, police identified and detained a suspect. He turned out to be a previously convicted 33-year-old resident of a neighboring state. Criminal investigation officers established the citizen’s involvement in the commission of three similar crimes in the city— reported the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.
The man admitted guilt and explained that he purposefully chose expensive bicycles left unattended on the streets of Kerch. Using wire cutters, the attacker cut the anti-theft cables and stole vehicles. The suspect managed to sell one stolen bicycle to third parties and spent the money on personal needs. The rest of the stolen property was seized and returned to its rightful owners.
Criminal cases have been initiated against the detainee by the investigative department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the city of Kerch on the grounds of a crime under Part 2 of Art. 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Theft”). The sanction of the article provides for a maximum penalty of imprisonment for a term of up to 5 years. Currently, the defendant has been chosen as a preventive measure in the form of detention.
